I knew very little, just that there was buzz. I ended up watching it on my laptop in bed with headphones in a completely pitch-black room as I bit my lip to stop from letting any potential jump scares wake the person next to me.
And I was riveted. I was kind of surprised at how riveted I was because then more than ever I didn't have a lot of patience for deliberately slow pace.
But somehow the very deliberate scenes in House of the Devil with the protagonist moving through the house worked like gangbusters on me.

This film tries to be a lighthearted buddy flick with a spooky ghost story as the backdrop, while simultaneously being a full blown supernatural horror show; and it succeeds in neither department.
For the most part that film worked. This film wants to be too many different things, and the most glaring issue is how little happens throughout.
This thing is a snooze fest! This could have been decent, but Ti clearly missed the mark here. Ti West follow up to House of the Devil, The Innkeepers suffers being all types of ghosts narratives.
Resulting in The Innkeeper being obtuse to actually be scary of understanding the hunting of the character. Which lead to my confusion of the stakes of The Innkeepers.
This is definitely not a movie I would usually seek out, but I was put in a position where I watched it.
Even for a cheap ghost film it's not very good. It has a decent setup for your run-of-the-mill ghost story, but it's execution is quite bad.
The film spends a lot of time in the beginning with exposition of its paper-thin characters. The script is generally quite bad, with a lot of awkward moments and drawn out exposition.
The acting is fairly bad as well, especially from the lead actress Sara Paxton, which at times compounds the film's problems and makes it seem amateurish and goofy.
The director Ti West never really utilizes the frame, either, and generally…. So so mumblecore "horror" film. Believe it or not this is a light comedy for most of the first half.
Very little story. Very little scares. Pointless small role for Lena Dunham. Nothing happens really until close to the end and the rest of the film seems like mostly fillet even though some is entertaining.
