The Pros: From memory, it seems to hold true to the original. Most of the characters seem true and the Yamato looked great and the battle scenes are nicely done.
The Cons: The battle scenes, and the Yamato itself aren't seen anywhere near enough or the scenes are way too short and the action cut scenes too quick.
I thought the musical score was too loud and intrusive at times to the point of being distracting. It was as if it was trying to compensate for the acting being unable to draw out an emotional response from me.
When watching the dubbed English version I also tried Japanese with English subtitles , it felt as if most of the English voice actors weren't quite emotionally connected to the characters, I don't know how else to explain it.
Also, it was as if most of the female voices actresses had the voices of teenage girls and it just sounded juvenile. As far as the acting and the script, it's probably B movie at best or as if it was an average Scy-Fy movie channel movie.
Hard to tell about the actual acting, it definitely sounded better and seemed more emotionally connected when listening to the Japanese with the subtitles.
Watching dubbed English has its own lipsync issues. I also thought the ending was long and drawn out and wrong for the movie that is if you are used to seeing Star Blazers.
Quick summary, heavy on the drama, skimpy on the space battle scenes. Decent visual effects. Average acting if you are watching the dubbed English version.
Another ten minutes of decently done space battles would have been nice. See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. It's actually based on an old anime called Star Blazers but alas I unfortunately don't know anything about that so can't say whether it's faithful to that I'm afraid.
Brief description- world gets all but destroyed by an unseen alien nation known as the Gamilians, then 5 years later the remaining Human race is being destroyed by radiation poisoning and Earths last hope rests on one ship- YAMATO to travel to the far reaches of the solar system to find a cure for the radiation poisoning before its completely destroyed.
Think along the lines of Battlestar Galatica, Starship Troopers and even Halo and you'll be on the right track.
The positives outweigh the negatives for me tho, the attention to detail is brilliant, it looks absolutely fantastic, the quite phenomenal special effects are mind blowing especially the titular ship itself.
The characters I cared for, although not all got fleshed out enough for me, but there's some real bad ass heroes, a feisty female fighter pilot and a cool gun totting robot.
Overall not classic, it wouldn't top any of my polls but it's still an enjoyable film with incredible special effects. Recommended by me.
Well I wasn't entirely what to expect as many of these films that insert live action to cartoon films often don't have the same feeling as the originals.
Now in this case it neither succeeds, but more especially does not fail. It is a way to wind away the hours and a good deal has been done with a film that does not have the backing of a major film seen generally in the West.
I did like the way some of the characters build and their interactions. Also for those not expecting it, namely my Son, it is subtitled and like many films of this genre over-dubbing English would simply not have worked.
If you are prepared to read the subtitles, see the characters, and listen to the tone of the voice it helps establish the emotion at the time.
At the end of the day, I enjoyed it, my Son ended up enjoying it; it is not a US Blockbuster type film and it is not one of those cheesy US made for television films.
It is from my youth one of those better than the rest B Movies with credible actors, some good special effects and a plot that generally builds. One person found this helpful.
I absolutely loved this film! I really enjoyed the character development and the sense of honour and tragic heroism. Thoroughly enjoyed the special effects in the battle scenes, which didn't leave the viewer totally dazzled and bewildered.
Must admit I was crying like a baby by the end. If you have read the critics, you know what you are in for, and if you'll like it or not.
