After saving each other's lives, Dobbs agrees to help Dubois return home, but deceives him and sells Dubois into slavery on an island off the coast of Siam , where Dubois is trained in Muay Thai fighting.
After six months, Dobbs and his partner Harri Smythe find Dubois fighting in a Muay Thai match and see that he has become a skilled fighter.
Dobbs later assists and exploits Dubois, buying his freedom so the now-expert fighter can represent the U. The winner of the tournament receives a valuable statue made of solid gold, the Golden Dragon.
Along for the journey are American reporter Carrie Newton and heavyweight boxing champion Maxie Devine. Dubois ultimately wins the tournament by defeating Khan the representative of Mongolia and he is given a medal and proclaimed the greatest fighter, but does not accept the Golden Dragon.
Instead he trades it for the lives of Dobbs and his comrade Harri, who were sentenced to death for previously trying to steal the Golden Dragon.
Back in the bar, Dubois explains he returned to New York and helped the children get off the streets. Ultimately, things turned out for the best.
Devine helped to train many great fighters, while Dobbs and Harri opened a trading post deep in the Amazon.
In the final scene, a book closes, revealing its title, 'The Quest', and that it was written by Carrie Newton. The reaction of many professional film critics was negative, citing the movie's thin script, Jean-Claude Van Damme's direction, and too much resemblance to Van Damme's previous hit Bloodsport.
However, some critics praised the film's production values, beautiful locations, and Roger Moore 's performance, while fans of martial arts films praised The Quest for showcasing various fighting styles from around the world.

As expected by a film lead by Jean-Claude Van Damme, the acting is not the high point, it was functional enough for the film though. Having a small cast of major characters and not all that much character backstory or development, you could see the actors were at least trying.
His charming demeanour and random intervals of comic relief helped to deter from the fact that he was actually selfish, although his character does flesh out over the course of the film.
Carrie Newton is played by Janet Gunn and was mostly there to function as a pretty face and provide somewhat of a romantic interest for the lead Van Damme character.
Orphaned after the death of his mother, he finds himself the leader of an orphan boy group. Like a modern day muscle-clad version of Robin Hood, he steals from the criminally rich to feed himself and his gang.
After a series of unfortunate events, Chris is forced to flee from the police and accidentally finds himself as a slave for a pirate group. Upon being saved by the charming thief Hobbs, Roger Moore he is unwittingly sold to a group of Muay Thai fighters, where he learns the art of proper combat.
The action is the glue which holds this film together, the sequences are prevalent at the beginning of the film and the use of narrative helps to bind it, whilst at the same time, guiding you towards the next action set piece.
When we hit the third act, slightly beyond the halfway mark, is where the action takes centre stage.
The Ghang-Gheng is a tournament where individuals from countries all over the world fight against one another, this opens up some very interesting fight scenes.
We get to see different combat styles compete with each other in some well-choreographed scenes. The film plays on this sometimes, obviously to add humour.

I am very into martial arts movies and I dont care how corny or stupid and I liked how this one was similiar to Van Dammes greatest "Bloodsport", I always like the "secret tournament, nobody knows about, in a hidden location" type movies, they never get old no matter how many times the plot is done over.

This program was hilarious from the get-go, with a 4 pound a week rented caravan, a forgotten tin opener, a fold out bed that wouldn't work, a dropped cigarette, morning whizzes "tie a knot in it, then" , even the flatulent humour made me grin.
While Dave and Ronno seek to impress two girls camping nearby, Charlie has fallen for the farmer's neice. Dave shows he is truly a man of steel in the Wile E.
Coyote fashion as he meets every defeat and humiliation with the English stiff upper lip. Greg Faulkner perfectly catches each act of ridicule in a Mr.
Bean fashion, and still insists the girls desire him. He and Ronno even manage to get even at least once. The resemblance between Faulkner and David Jason, who wrote the story and plays the older version of Dave, is perfectly matched as well.
Jim Sturgess as Charlie looks more like Josh Hartnett, but manages to do humor without looking foolish, something Hartnett can't swing without tarnishing his only appeal; his pretty boy image.
Max Wrottesley, as Ronno, serves only as Dave's sidekick, but Ronno ends up paired with the scene stealing Mazz Murray, one of three fun girls on the razzle in Blackpool.
