Takeshi's Castle was dubbed and shown on Channel 5 between and In , Channel 7 Thailand bought the rights to remake the show. The show's format is identical to the one used in the original show, but with a few minor changes.
Any winners receive the 1,, Thai-baht cash prize, the cash prize is rolled over to the next episode if there are no winners. Later on, the show reduced the number of competitors to 20, and then 12 in current shows.
With the rules format changing, the competitors don't get eliminated throughout the show, but instead work as a team. The competitors are given, by Shogun Takeshi, 10 carts and the Shogun has no guard carts at the beginning of the episode.
The competitors then play 5 challenges before the Showdown. In the first challenge, usually involved all the competitors playing at the same time, every single competitors must pass the challenge, while the subsequent challenges needs at most 5 passes in order to be credited as a win.
Winning a challenge will cause the situation remaining unchanged, while losing the first challenge takes one cart away from the competitors team and one cart added to Shogun's team in Showdown.
In subsequent challenges, one car is taken away and added to Shogun's team if less than 5 competitors passed, two cars are taken if less than 3 competitors passed.
In current shows, with 12 competitors, two cars are taken away if less than 3 competitors passed, while 3 passes are credit with a win, and no cars are taken away.
Losing a challenge also results in a punishment for the competitors in various ways, usually messy and painful.
In Showdown, the team sends out two competitors per one cart they have to battle with Shogun's guards. Succeeding in Battle awards all competitors a share of 5,, baht cash prize, but the prize is remain the same in all episodes.
The show was first introduced to British audiences in the late s, when it was featured semi-regularly as part of LWT 's Tarrant on TV , in which broadcaster Chris Tarrant showcased a variety of unusual television programmes from around the world.
One of the series' previous hosts, Clive James , appeared in an original Japanese episode as an international contestant - with behind the scenes footage shown as part of his two-part ITV documentary Takeshi's Castle would become more well-known later when a condensed version of the original series proved an unexpected hit when it premiered on Challenge on 9 November , regularly dominating the top ten programmes on the channel each week.
The UK format did not follow the original Japanese format - instead presenting each sequence of games as comic martial challenges leading to the final game wherein contestants not so far eliminated try to storm Takeshi's Castle.
Each episode in the original run was narrated by Craig Charles , who also coined the term "Keshi Heads" to describe avid fans of the show.
A typical episode of the UK format of Takeshi's Castle has about eight games, followed by the final Showdown. After each event, a 'Ridiculous Replay' is shown, highlighting the most entertaining attempt.
Challenge decided to edit out the comedy sketches between Takeshi and Higashi to allow more or fewer games to be shown during the half-hour block.
More series were commissioned and shown over the next few months, culminating in a series of hour-long specials in the Autumn of , and a special highlights show, The A-Z of Takeshi's Castle , broadcast on January 1, which showed some of the best clips of the best games as the last original series finale.
In February , a campaign was launched by fansite Keshi Heads in an attempt to bring a brand new series of Takeshi's Castle to Challenge within its 10th anniversary year on the channel November It was suggested by campaigners that these new episodes would feature never-before-seen games previously completely cut from other episodes , and feature five Japanese episodes new to the UK, including the Pilot and an International Special which have never been seen on TV since their original airings in Japan.
On 13 December , Challenge announced that they had signed a deal for "unseen bits of Takeshi's Castle".
The new series, named Takeshi's Castle Rebooted , which aired from 8 to 29 March , featured games and episodes suggested by the Keshi Heads website in their campaign.
Hayato Tani also filmed presentation links for the new series. Rebooted disappointed fans, with many complaining about Charles' replacement as voiceover.
In contrast to the newly produced series, these entered the weekly top ten rating shows almost instantly upon their return.
Rebooted has since been repeated in off-peak timeslots. If the contestants lose, the General retreats to prepare for his next assault. If the contestants win - celebrations!! Takeshi begrudgingly awards the victors their prize.
Special episodes have a twist on the usual format. In special editions of regular episodes, the General gathers armies of contestants based on a certain criteria.
Will youth, experience, or the power of love prove to be the crucial ingredient he needs to finally overthrow Takeshi? There are also special bumper-length episodes; bringing Takeshi's traps and trials to different locations and different people.
In each region, the locals play three games. The best contestants then head to the castle to play as usual.
Takeshi has to try to win back his stronghold, either by playing the games himself, with the Emerald Guards, or by commanding a team of monsters to storm the castle for him!
The winners from here finally travel back to the castle in Japan for a final Show Down. The winners from each area all travel to the castle and take on more extraordinary courses, in an attempt to reach the Ultimate Showdown.
The winners travel to the castle to play as usual, except this time they're playing for prizes in the final - and not taking part in a Show Down.
Ep Each of the original episodes was edited down to 30 minutes for the English audience, keeping only the games, and was voiced-over by comedian Craig Charles.
International Special The series proved a surprise hit. This lead Challenge to commission three more series' in , ending with 10 special hour-long episodes.
In these episodes some of the non-game footage was left in; mainly at the start of the show, creating a storyline. Three four for series one 'Best Of' compilations were also produced at the end of each series, featuring highlights from that run.
Several mistakes were made in the reversioning - especially during the first series - which include winners in the final Show Down being ignored and announced as another loss instead.
Craig also states that exactly contestants begin each episode, with a fixed number moving on from the first game, etc. Lots of games were also cut out to make the episodes fit the half-hour time slot.
On a few occasions games cut from one episode were stuck into another to pad out the show. A couple of episodes are made up entirely of previously-cut games.
Other errors include referring to characters by the wrong name - most notably General "Lee". Avalanche Craig established may catchphrases throughout the series, which become synonymous with the show "What a wazzock", "Happy Clappy Jappy Chappies", "As my old dad used to say Takeshi's Castle became one of Challenge's most popular and best-loved shows, and so was repeated daily for years.
In the series underwent a slight makeover. The graphics in the titles were changed , and some colour and brightness issues in series one were fixed.
This "new look" launched on the 7th September. Over the weekend of the 2nd-3rd June Challenge aired a Takeshi's Castle marathon, with back-to-back episodes broadcast from 11am to 6pm across the two days.
On the second day the stunt was proving so popular that "Takeshi's Castle" became a Worldwide Trend on Twitter - ranked above terms related to the Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebrations, which were also being broadcast on the same day.
Several Japanese news outlets picked up on this and ran stories about the "sudden phenomenon" on their websites. The aim being to hop between Skipping Stones picking up stars, darumas and other bonus items, to earn points while avoiding capture by the Boxing Monster.
In , here at Keshi Heads, we launched a campaign with the aim to get Challenge to produce a brand new series of Takeshi's Castle, using previously unseen footage.
It was a success! On the 13th December Challenge officially announced that the new episodes would air in early Tani is unimpressed Challenge originally asked Craig Charles if he would like to return for this new series, and Craig said yes.
However sadly, and bafflingly, Challenge changed their minds. As a surprise, Hayato Tani returned to his role as The General to film some exclusive footage for the new episodes.
The new series, named "Takeshi's Castle Rebooted", premiered on the 8th March with brand new titles, graphics and music.

Challenge received more negative comments about Takeshi's Castle Rebooted, on their social media accounts, than any other show in the channel's history - most complaints regarding Craig being replaced.
The series never once hit the top ten rated shows of the week and, due to Challenge deciding to change almost everything that made their original version so popular, Takeshi's Castle Rebooted was a massive flop.
The classic Craig-voiced episodes returned to Challenge after Rebooted ended its run. In stark contrast to the newly produced series, these old episodes entered the weekly top ten rating shows almost instantly upon their return!
