Sound Mix: Stereo. This one is not a musical. That is probably a very big thing for you to consider, as in my experience people either adore or hate musicals, with little middle ground.
I recommend you watch it, it's well worth your time. Fantastic movie! This is not a musical. This is a drama.
I absolutely loved this version. Because it is not a musical, it does not carry a light hearted tone for most of the movie. This story is not supposed to be light hearted anyway.
This dramatic version adds weight to the storyline compared to the semi light hearted musical starring Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter.
I'd been looking for any more movies or documentaries about the origin of Sweeney Todd. I came across this made-for-tv movie about the Barber.
Although a lot of info about WHY he was incarcerated is vague, this movie is very true to the original story. Ray Winstone plays the title role of Sweeney and does an excellent job performing the role.
Lovett becomes the woman he protects from scummy boyfriends. He takes care of them. It isn't until she's very sick from an STD from one of her suitors that he comes clean about what he does to some of his "clients".
The story takes a turn in the end and provides a great ending to his life of slicing and dicing. I highly recommend this version, especially since it's more based on the "String of Pearls" story from the original Penny Blood series.
I did. I surprisingly liked this more than the musical, It was more serious and felt like a horror movie. That acting was pretty good, The blood and things looked good.
I personally loved it. This version is a wonderfully macabre and very different BBC drama adaptation of the famous story. Also featured are Tom Hardy and David Warner.
It's a bloody, morbid, psychological drama, and it is grand! This film gives you more insight into how a young boy grew to become the Demon Barber of Fleet Street, and a look into the workings of a twisted and tortured mind.
The costumes and acting are fantastic. Not a pretty story, but definitely one worthy a watch if you enjoy penny-dreadfuls and the Sweeney Todd legend.
Great film! If you're not a fan of musicals, this is a great adaptation. It is simply done, no overstretching of the characters.
All of the acting is top notch, all this provides for a must see for fans of the stories. I enjoyed it very much. I think you will too.
A compelling version of the story, more realistic than the musical adaptation. Strong performances. Dark and disturbing, as one might expect - but with at least as much pathos as anything else.

I liked the adaptation of the off-off Broadway Hedwig and the Angry Inch, but have been left underwhelmed by all the recent big budget film musicals, so I'm glad to say that Sweeney Todd, wipes the floor with every major screen musical of the last decade, including the likable if over extended Hairspary.
Most surprising is how shockingly gruesome the the film becomes in the second half. This must be the most blood drenched film since Shogun Assassin, with arteries spurting blood like like fountains as throats are cut, with the violence escalating towards the end leading towards a climax that is exhilarating, heartbreaking and satisfyingly bleak.
Unlike the dreary dirges Danny Elfman supplied for Burton's stop frame musicals, Sondheim's score is a joy to listen to from beginning to end, its dark romanticism sometimes reminding me of Bernhard Herrmann, perfectly fitting what is both a musical and a horror film in equal measures.
Depp and Bonham Carter are both excellent and it's down to their performances that I never quite lost sympathy with them in their descent into madness, blood lust and cannibalism.
