It's not a feel good movie for sure and there's a particular scene that's hard to see, but makes the movie feel more genuine.
I love all the gritty, dirty, close-ups that put you right there with the family and their anguish. It was a little far-fetched that the baby survived this trek without milk, but that's ok I still love this movie so much.

In a way, I think it was a tad refined insomuch as the horrors that met many young girls caught in the rush to escape were not fully portrayed, but that is probably for the best.

It is the spaces between which stay with me - the boys playing in the woods, the powerful lack of forcing background music or only in exceptional moments , the woman on the cart giving the children an egg The acting, especially by Saskia Rosendahl as the main girl, is stupendous.
But it is the concentrated, loving direction and cinematography which dominates. The fact that the protagonists come from a Fuhrer-worshipping family, but are still treated as human beings, says it all.
The girl's awakening to the lies of her upbringing is marvellously muted. As seen from a pro-german view of a hitler youth teen daughter and her younger siblings, leaving home to escape the russians near the collapse of germany and trying to avoid other allies, while eventually hoping to reach their grandparents home, grudgingly from the teen daughter with the help of a teen jew male.
Interesting story of migration of children during the WW2, it's worth remembering where the concept of Europe was born from the cauldron of 2 world wars.
This is a well crafted movie that covers a parentless family's incredible journey from family home to their grandparents.

That said, the narrator is enough to drive someone batty. He has the weirdest pauses in his speech, it's like listening to a computerized voice with no idea of how punctuation works or what words are supposed to sound like.
The stories are actually good, just like the podcast. However, the horrible narration is just too distracting to the story.
I made it through a whole episode and it was visually stunning. The voice over does not go throughout the whole thing - it does stop for some of the story to be told with actors recreating the narrative - which is why I gave it more than one star.
That said, it does continue between these scenes, causing them to lose any effectiveness. If they get a new voice over artist, then maybe I will try again.
Love the IDEA of the show, what it presents and even how it presents it. I cant however stand the issue of the narration being so broken.
I understand that it was originally a podcast, and the sound editing was not well done, but you would think that Amazon would be even a little effort into cleaning this up.
I had high hopes for this series. The first two episodes were excellent and I was intrigued and interested the entire time. Episode 3 was almost like a joke.
The acting was horrible, so horrible that I lost interest in the story. Episodes 4 and 5 were even more boring and could have used a lot more of the narrator and less acting.
Plus the quality of the stories seemed to really degrade. Episode 6 was a little more interesting, but overall I wasn't left with a really great feeling towards further episodes.
Season 2 should be coming out soon I believe and I'm not sure if I will watch them because it feels like this series peaked after the first two episodes.
I've listened to the podcast for a long time. I like the research and I like being spooked. In the podcast he really overuses "you see The acting in the show could be better.
I love Holland Roden so I liked seeing her in a new role. I watched the whole thing because I was avoiding other tasks and I couldn't get netflix and hulu on the wifi I was using.
