Brian describes them in horror as large dark beach ball-like monsters expanding and contracting with semicircular caves as mouths and gnashing blurring teeth leaving trails of black nothingness in their wake.
Craig flees in terror and heads for the refuge of the terminal. The first two Langoliers follow him past the plane, leaving Engle enough time to get the plane moving towards the runway.
Though Craig nearly escapes, the Langoliers catch up with him after biting off his legs and eat him, killing him. In the plane, Bob theorizes that the Langoliers are the timekeepers of eternity, and that their purpose is to clean up what is left of the past by eating it.
The plane takes off, and as they fly the passengers watch the rest of the land below falling into a formless, black void. As the aircraft heads for Los Angeles, they discuss their pasts.
Nick reveals himself as a specialist in the British Army, on a mission to assassinate the girlfriend of a Boston politician funding the IRA.
Dinah speaks to Laurel about how her life is ending happily, then quietly succumbs to her injuries. Nick confesses his feelings for Laurel and his hopes of a romance with her after returning home.
Albert and Bethany reveal a similar attraction to each other. All the characters realize that they have considerable regrets in their pasts, and that the trip through the rift has allowed them to come to terms with their actions.
Bob soon realizes that they must be asleep to survive going through the rift again. Nick volunteers to manipulate the controls, knowing full well this will cost him his life.
He takes a moment to ask Laurel to pass a message to his father, telling that he, Nick, was going to leave the "business.
Nick vanishes as the plane passes through the rift, leaving only the fillings from his teeth and an artificial knee behind. In the TV version , only his watch remains.
The survivors awaken unharmed, with the exception of nosebleeds caused by the pressure drop. Seemingly, nothing has changed. The plane lands in a deserted Los Angeles.
When they check outside, the passengers again hear a noise. It is not the ominous sound of the Langoliers, but a relaxing hum.
However, a few things can be deduced from their behavior. When chasing Toomey, the Langoliers appear more curious than directly malevolent, despite their fearsome appearance.
To clarify, they behave more like animals investigating prey than demons sent to devour lazy young men according to Toomey. They chase Toomey persistently, even though they could have killed him in barely under a minute as shown when they bite off his leg in one swoop.
Clearly, they aren't so single-minded as to kill him at the first chance. The name "Langoliers" as it refers to these creatures was coined by Craig Toomey, the antagonist of the novella.
As a child Toomey's father told him about furry monsters that would eat children who didn't behave, similar to the Boogyman. They supposedly lived in closets and possessed unnatural speeds to catch the children who tried to "scamper away.

As the others search the airport for any type of help, Craig becomes more unstable, and after finding a gun in an airport locker, takes Bethany hostage and demands they take off again.
Albert subdues Craig and Nick ties him up after realizing the gun's bullets are similarly affected by the strange environment and thus harmless, to the point that a bullet essentially bounces off Albert without actually hurting him.
Dinah warns them the noises in the distance are getting louder. Part of the group discover a "pocket of the present" on board the plane, and objects brought aboard from the airport regain their normal behavior.
The group determine they can refuel and take off, heading for the time rift, and hopefully return to normal time. As Brian prepares the plane for take off, the others go to bring Craig back, but find he has escaped the bonds.
When found, he stabs Dinah and Don with a knife, killing the latter. Albert again subdues Craig, and the others leave him unconscious in the airport as they race Dinah back to the plane.
As they board, the group witnesses strange creatures emerge from the horizon, consuming everything including the ground. Bob calls these creatures Langoliers, creatures that feed on time which has passed.
As a panicked Craig comes running out of the airport, a weak Dinah is able to psychically convince him his meeting has moved from Boston to here.
The delay leaves Craig vulnerable and he is eaten by the Langoliers. The plane takes off just as the Langoliers consume the entire airport beneath them.
As they fly through the void, Dinah succumbs to her wound and dies while recalling the lines "everything was beautiful, even things that were dead.
As the plane approaches the time rift, Bob hastily recalls they had survived their first trip into the rift because they had been asleep, and could disappear if they pass through it awake.
Brian is able to reduce the cabin pressure, which will knock them unconscious, but someone needs to remain awake to fly the plane on course.

This world is just dead. They come up with a plan to backtrack and try to slip back through whatever crack in the time stream brought them here, but time, even dead time, is working against them.
Not only do they have to deal with Craig Toomey, who is quickly losing what little sanity he was holding onto on the plane, and is now descending into a murderous rage, but the blind girl, Dinah, hears something outside.
Something like cereal snap crackling and popping in milk. When I first read this story, I had no idea what it was about, where it was going, or how it would turn out.
So from the very beginning, the odds were stacked against me liking The Langoliers even half as much as the book. But at least there was a chance.
If it had just had a better script. Better actors. Better effects. At the time, I was pleased that David Morse was playing the main character.
