I've seen thousands of films, and own hundreds, and have a better than average comprehension of the cinematic arts than your average consumer, and I simply cannot find whatever it is that triggers the peculiar neurological anomaly in viewers who complain that Hard Rain is "boring," or it's plot "convoluted.
HR is a taught and relentlessly paced action film that hits the ground running the instant the opening credits fade from the screen, and barely pauses to let you catch your breath before the final credits begin to roll.
If you have time to get bored, there's something seriously amiss, see a doctor immediately. While there may not be any spectacular stunts that you've never seen anywhere before, the stunts abound, and the chase is nonstop - as is the torrential downpour and the rising flood - this story is so dark and so wet, you may feel the need to towel off several times before it's over.
Of course there are implausible escapes, you can't have an action movie without impossible hair-breadth narrow misses every few minutes, and cynical characters double-crossing each other, and guns that never empty - until it's convenient for the script writer the same mind who brought you 'Speed' and 'Broken Arrow,' no less, also top notch breathless actioners.
What you won't find, are long monologues, existential angst, or nuanced character development. These people are pretty much what they appear to be the first time they're seen onscreen.
They don't grow, or wisen, or mellow with time. They chase and try to kill each other. There are a handful of decent human beings, a whole bunch of greedy A-holes, and some old folks for comedy relief, and it's not hard to tell who's who.
But if Hard Rain doesn't keep you glued to the screen from beginning to end, adjust your meds and watch it again. It's not the movie, it's you.
This movie seemed like the average heist movie at first but it had enough surprises and turns that it kept me guessing at to how everything would work out in the end.
The acting is great and the casting was done well. I thoroughly enjoyed it and recommend it for any disaster movie fans or of course any heist or action movie fans.
You got to love the ending. Really good acting by all. Mega action, couldn't believe what bad shots everyone was, but that was good because then the movie would have been over in 10 minutes!

The story was simple to start with, but as always, greed takes over honest people. The chases through the turbulent waters were very well done, and the deepening floods seemed to spread all over the country.
Unfortunately we have witnessed scenes similar to this with flash floods in many countries, and so this film was more realistic than one would like.
And those wonderful stained glass windows! Oh, dear. A fantastic thriller not knowing whats next and what to expect is totally different, a moving storyline that will haunt you for years and not to soon forgotten as if I watched it yesterday.
Thrills all around suspense chilling and keeping you from moving as if glued to the chair, I love movies like that.
I highly recommend taking a look at and seeing for yourself so I rated this an A grade plus, full on action and suspense that you can't wait for.

A preposterous crime thriller, Hard Rain, is great to watch if you can suspend your disbelief and go along with the flow. The story concerns a heroic armoured truck cop, played to the hilt by Christian Slater, whose truck breaks down in a flooded street and is targeted by a nasty gang of robbers led by the nicest villain imaginable.
Morgan Freeman plays the likeable bad guy in this soggy thriller that is sunk by a ridiculous story line. This movie is best seen and forgotten quickly.
There are some good chase scenes but it's all fairly predictable. This flick proves one thing though: Morgan Freeman can never play a villain. The guy is just not made for it!

Karen pushes Phil out of the boat to return to protect the church, which she is restoring. The town's dam operator Hank is forced to open a spillway floodgate causing a large wave and deeper flooding.
Tom is trapped in his cell as the water rises. After protecting the church, Karen rescues him and they hide from the gang. Kenny is electrocuted.
They enter a house and are mistaken for looters by the elderly residents Doreen and Henry Sears who have declined to evacuate and are determined to protect their property.
Henry is persuaded to give Tom their boat to return to the armored truck. Resurfacing from the submerged truck he finds the gang holding the elderly couple hostage.
Tom says he will tell where the money is. Jim reveals to Tom that Charlie was in cahoots with the gang, and did not actually call the National Guard.
He was only killed because Kenny was not told Charlie was on their side. Tom finds the money has disappeared.
They are ambushed by Sheriff Collins and his deputies plus Hank, who have found Karen and intend to keep the money for themselves.
Mehlor and Ray are killed in the shoot out, and Jim and Tom escape and hide in the church. Wayne takes Karen to her house intending to rape her.
The others petrol bomb the church and drive their boats through the stained glassed windows. Karen stabs and kills Wayne. Hank shoots Phil for not shooting Tom when he had the chance.
The dam overtop alarm sounds. Collins suggests Tom and Jim should let Hank and him go with a couple of the bags of money.
Tom agrees, but Jim does not. Tom leaves to try to save Karen, before Collins shoots Jim with a revolver he was hiding, although Jim isn't badly hurt.
Collins and Hank escape in a boat. Hank is pushed out by Collins and is killed in a gas explosion. Tom finds Karen handcuffed to a banister.
He frees her and they climb to the roof to avoid the water where they are caught by Collins. Jim comes from behind them in a boat.
Collins shoots at him, disabling the steering, forcing him to go over the roof. As he does so, the engine breaks off and collides with the sheriff, knocking him into the water.
Collins tries to shoot Karen as he grabs a bag of money, but Tom and Jim shoot the corrupt sheriff dead. Tom tells Jim he should leave, just as the State Police arrive.
Jim picks up Collins' bag of money and rows away, as Tom tells Karen the fire damage to her church wasn't too bad and can be repaired.

Hard Rain is fun. The "bad" guy and the "good" guy eventually must work together to survive and they can't help but bond and look out for each other.
What's more, girl saves guy, then guy saves girl, all toward a mostly happy ending. Finally, in light of typical action movies where most everyone seems to die of gunshot, automobile accidents, explosives, or violent nature, Hard Rain delights with a string of deaths that rely on unique combinations of nature and human elements.
I had never seen this movie. I used to love Christian Slater back in the day before he got messed up. I know he is doing better now.
