I don't know if the makers wanted the relation between Frank and his kids to seem empty, but that's how it seemed to be throughout the film until the end.

Even if it was lack of chemistry between actors, which of course I highly doubt it was, it works wonders and shows that Frank is like an alien to them and also that they are alien to him.

When he learns that all of his children aren't actually as successful, he seems like he's struggling within to try and understand where they're coming from instead of just showing his disappointment.

When things finally come tumbling down towards the film's climax, they come right back together as a family would. This movie made me tear up and really the only reason I didn't cry was because I was with friends.

I could write a lot more about this but I'll just suggest that if you're looking for a good movie about family, or even if you just like De Niro that's why I saw it , you should definitely see this movie.

For no good reason, British director Kirk Jones overplays the sentiment, but the greater mystery here is how a great and experienced actor like De Niro continues to play with amateurs.

The movie is well-executed and well-written too. Robert De Niro's character as a widower who wants to start to get to know his four children is portrayed perfectly and at times, hit too close to home.

I don't understand why the critics said the movie has plot holes or unresolved story; maybe just maybe, not all movie should follow the Hollywood standard of rules and regulations, no?

Mesh B Super Reviewer. Jan 02, I just watched it, Monday and I was quite moved. A terrific performance by Robert DeNiro as the man who sets out to reconnect to his children when they fail to converge for the family reunion he had planned at the house.

Watching him get shuffled from one home to the next, all the while acting like he didn't know they were lying to him was heartbreaking to watch.

And yet, behind it all, you knew that they all loved him and just wanted to protect him from the truth about their lives that they feared would disappoint him.
