This is a little gem of a movie, with a great cast of characters and an intense and gripping story line. My original interest in the film stemmed from Michael Fassbender's leading role, as I had not seen him in a part I had not enjoyed, but out of the main host of characters I enjoyed each individual's performance just as much as the last.
Whether you are focused on Dominic West's General Character, or the main antagonist, a mute, practically inhuman tracker played by Olga Kurylenko you are given insight into their lives and a bit of understanding about them, and whether you like or hate them for this reason is fleshed out as the film progresses.
This movie while at first about a losing war becomes a battle for survival against all odds. You get to see the true colors of small rag tag crew and the lines between the traditional views of 'good' and 'evil'.
If you are in the mood for plenty of action, some great filmography and compelling writing and characters, than this is worth a watch, and more importantly a buy.
Centurion is the tale of the mysterious 9th Legion of Rome who vanished in what is now known as Scotland around the year AD The film opens with Dias escaping capture of the Picts the violent and fierce tribe that control the area now known as Great Brittan.
This era was defined by the aggressive army of the Roman empire. They thought that all of Europe and whatever else was out there should be ruled by them.
So naturally the Romans took to invading other countries and establishing ruling governments there. They found the Picts most troublesome as their leader Gorlacon Ulrich Thomsen utilized tactics that the Romans were ill prepared for.
So once Dias is rescued by a Roman patrol and reports what has happened a decision is made to send the 9th Legion to eliminate and subjugate the Picts once and for all.
They decide to use a former Pict as guide to the area. This Pict is named Etain and is played by Olga Kurylenko. It's believed that she's pledged her loyalties to Rome even though she is mute.
So the 9th legion heads into Pict territory where they are set up in a trap by Etain. A fierce battle is waged and the Picts come out on top.
General Virilus is captured and brought back to Gorlacon. Somehow Dias survives yet again an encounter with the Picts. He leads a small group of 7 surviving Romans on a dual mission.
One to rescue General Virilus and second get who ever is left out of Pict land and back to Rome. That is the gist of the rest of the film in a nutshell.
Dias and company encounter treacherous weather and other dangers in a savage land. And of course Gorlacon sanctions Etain to search for the survivors and kill them.
Etain is like an old world version of the Terminator she will not stop hunting the Romans unless she herself dies. The fleeing Romans try to stay ahead of Etain and her small army thus staying alive and having a chance to make it back home.
Along the way they do encounter one ally a Pict exile named Arianne Imogem Poots who was exiled because the rest of the Picts believe she practice magic.
The film is quite suspenseful and very violent and gory under the direction of Neil Marshall. This film here would be his biggest undertaking using a much bigger cast and creating another world using both sets and the natural wonders of Scotland.
Add in the fact that Fassbenser is an up and coming star who's been in a bunch of films as has Dominic West.
In fact both were in together a film not unlike Centurion. The film is beautifully shot you feel cold watching the actors trudging up snow covered mountains.
The acting is first rate by all 3 leads and Poots and Thomsen are good in their roles as well. A quick note that Mr. Marshall is a big supporter of strong women in his films.
I wouldn't say he's a feminist but all of his work contains at least 1 if not more strong female leads.
Heck the Descent was a film with a group of women in a cave against cave monsters. Etain is a beautiful and fierce fighter not someone to mess with.
So if you are a fan of films like Gladiator,Spartacus and then you most likely will eat up Centurion as well. I look forward to seeing more from Neil Marshall in the years to come.
There are other reviews that give summaries, or historical critique so I won't bother with that. I'll just say that if you're into historical drama concerning the time period, you're going to like this movie.
And if you've never really tried this type of movie, give it a go! It's got plenty of action and suspense There's a bit of rather realistic gore, but it's completely necessary to the story I just looked away a few times And, honestly, the scenery was amazing as well.
I'm definitely going to be watching it again. I remember seeing this advertised for like 20 minutes before disappearing forever.
I assumed, going in, that it was gonna be a complete trainwreck. I was greeted with a surprisingly watchable movie. Somewhat ordinary story - general-guy has an army doing stuff, hero has been captured.
Hero escapes - general-guy gets captured. Hero guy goes to save general guy. You've seen "this movie" before.
The action was entertaining though. I make no claim to knowing historical accuracy one way or another, but my uninformed self found the fighting scenes plenty authentic and fun to watch.

They fight, with Dias choking Thax to death. Bothos, joyfully riding toward the Romans, is mistaken for a charging Pict and shot by an archer.
Devastated, Dias reports to Agricola, who worries that news of the legion's annihilation will lead other tribes to revolt. Fearful of his reputation being tainted by a military failure, he decides the Ninth Legion's fate should remain a mystery and Dias must be silenced.
Dias foils the attempt on his life by Agricola's daughter Drusilla. Badly wounded in the thigh, he knocks Drusilla unconscious and escapes from the camp, returning to Arianne in the forest.
The film ends with Arianne kissing him after he falls from his horse. Centurion was written originally by director Neil Marshall under the working title Ninth Legion.
The Ninth Legion, according to one legend, marched into Scotland from York with over 3, men and disappeared. In recent years, historians have disputed the fate of the legion ; some believe they were disbanded, while others believe they were massacred in Germania or in the East fighting the Persians during the early years of the second century.

Sie gewährt den verfolgten Soldaten Schutz und die Wärme ihres Feuers. In der Zwischenzeit versuchen Thax und Macros, die nach dem Sprung von der Klippe in wilden Stromschnellen von der Gruppe getrennt worden waren, einem Rudel Wölfe zu entkommen.
Der schwächere Läufer Thax verwundet Macros an der Wade, um selbst zu entkommen, während dem Nubier ein aussichtsloser Kampf gegen die hungrigen Wölfe bevorsteht.
Nach zwei Tagen bei Arianne nehmen Quintus, der sich indes in Arianne verliebt hat, Brick und Bothos ihre Reise wieder auf und erreichen die vermeintlich rettende Garnison der Römer, welche sich lediglich zwei Tagesmärsche südlich der Behausung der einsamen Frau befindet.

Bald ahnt Quintus, dass es Thax war, der den Mord an dem Königssohn begangen und damit die blinde Wut der Pikten auf sie gezogen hat.
Am kommenden Tag erreichen die Männer einen Grenzwall , den die Römer gerade errichten. Thax bedroht daraufhin Dias mit einem Schwert und beschwört ihn, nichts vom Mord an dem Jungen seinen Vorgesetzten zu berichten.
In einem kurzen, erbitterten Gefecht muss Dias Thax töten. Entsetzt muss er dann mit ansehen, wie Bothos von einem römischen Bogenschützen getötet wird, da er die fellerne Bekleidung der Pikten trug und so mit dem Feind verwechselt wurde.
Dias, der einzige Überlebende der stolzen Neunten Legion, tritt nun dem Statthalter Agricola gegenüber. Dieser ist entsetzt.
Doch bevor zwei Soldaten Dias als letzten Zeugen der Schande der Neunten Legion beseitigen können, wehrt er sich und tötet seine ehemaligen Kameraden.
Von seiner Wunde geschwächt und über die Behandlung durch die römische Militärführung erbittert, reitet er in den Wald zu Arianne zurück.
